ABI.Local — Global Community Networking Website Supporting Women in Technology

Anita Borg Institute (ABI) is a non-profit organization located in the Silicon Valley seeking to empower women in technology. ABI works with women technologists in over 50 countries, as well as with partners with leading academic institutions and Fortune 500 companies.

ABI was looking to develop a brand new website called ABI.Local to be the go-to website for women technologists around the world to be inspired and make connections with our growing community – globally and locally. They approached us to help them develop a community-based website to make their dream come true.

We first entered into a discovery phase to really delve deep into what could be a great solution that was also within their budget. In the end, we developed a dynamic website that allows women (and male allies) to register, update their profiles, post updates to their own “wall”, join local chapters and attend events, purchase tickets (e-commerce system with shopping cart), and create coupon discounts to apply during checkout.

We also setup both public and invite-only hidden groups (for ABI.Local leadership), created a directory of ABI.Local chapters with an auto-updating Google map when new groups are added, and setup public and private forums for registered users.

The response has been tremendous with almost 4,000 members worldwide and more women are joining this empowering group every day. We’re proud to be working with such a great group.

“We are thrilled to launch ABI.Local — this is a pivotal step toward expanding and strengthening the network of women technologists, locally and around the world.”
